Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) — identifying rigid, self-defeating beliefs and replacing them with flexible, workable ones.
REBT focuses on the rigid demands people place on themselves, on others and on the world — the "musts" and "shoulds" that turn disappointment into distress.
The work is direct and philosophical as much as practical: examining a belief, testing whether it holds, and building a more flexible alternative you can actually live by.
It is particularly effective where anger, guilt or self-criticism is the dominant emotion rather than anxiety or low mood.
REBT is one of the original forms of cognitive behavioural therapy. It puts more emphasis on the rigid core beliefs and demands underneath a reaction, where standard CBT works more with specific situational thoughts.
